All signs point toward the Boston Red Sox making a big splash this offseason, potentially in the form of a Kyle Schwarber reunion.

Schwarber, 32, is one of the top free agents on the market and would fill Boston’s need for a middle-of-the-order slugger. Plus, Schwarber has proven himself capable of handling the pressure that comes with playing for the Red Sox, as evidenced by his impressive, abbreviated stint in Boston in 2021.

Multiple rumors have connected the Red Sox to Schwarber, but just how serious is their interest? MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, one of the industry’s top insiders, offered insight during a Tuesday morning segment.

“Pursuit is the word that I will use right now,” Morosi said. “Pursuit — not hot pursuit. But I can confirm this: Yes, the Red Sox have checked in on Kyle Schwarber; they’ve checked in with his camp. And remember well: It was four years ago he helped the Red Sox get to the American League Championship Series.

” … The Red Sox are well set up to get (Pete) Alonso or (Alex) Bregman. But I would add Schwarber to that conversation, too. My understanding is that Kyle really enjoyed his time in Boston. … I still view the Phillies as the favorites to retain Kyle Schwarber, but I do think the Red Sox are there if, all of a sudden, things break down between the Phillies and Schwarber.”

Schwarber began his big-league career in 2015 for the Chicago Cubs, for whom he hit .230 with 121 home runs across parts of six seasons. He signed with the Washington Nationals in 2021 but was sent to the Red Sox as part of a midseason trade. In 41 games for Boston, Schwarber hit .291 with seven homers and 18 RBIs.
