The MLB offseason is about to start heating up this week at the annual GM meetings in Las Vegas. While major moves are unlikely to be made, the meetings could spark negotiations that lead to big moves later in the winter.
MLB insider Bob Nightengale had positive updates on two of the Boston Red Sox’s biggest offseason targets in his Monday column for USA TODAY.
Regarding All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman, Nightengale believes the Red Sox have a good chance to re-sign him to a long-term deal after he officially opted out of his contract earlier this month.
“Bregman won’t get $40 million a year from the Red Sox after walking away from $80 million over two years, but the Red Sox still make the most sense, particularly with the Tigers proving they can win without him and the Cubs finding a third baseman with rookie Matt Shaw,” Nightengale writes.
That’s good news for Boston, as Bregman was one of the team’s best players in 2025, not to mention a valuable clubhouse leader.

Nightengale also likes the Red Sox’s chances to sign All-Star slugger Pete Alonso, who’s a free agent this offseason after seven terrific years with the New York Mets.
“GMs are predicting the perfect landing spot for Alonso just may be the Red Sox,” Nightengale writes, adding that the Mets may be willing to move on from him after missing the postseason.

Boston is seeking a middle-of-the-order bat after trading Rafael Devers last summer, and Alonso is one of the best sluggers in baseball. An elite right-handed power hitter and run producer, he’d be a great fit for Fenway Park.
The Red Sox have money to spend this winter and are looking to be aggressive after falling short in the playoffs this year. Accordingly, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them bring back Bregman and/or add a slugger of Alonso’s caliber.
