The Boston Red Sox made the postseason this year, but now Alex Bregman is a free agent. The Red Sox are reportedly interested in bringing him back, but he will have plenty of suitors.
It’s fair that many teams would want Bregman. He had a resurgent season and was a huge part of the Red Sox’s success. He was named an All-Star and would be a great addition for any team. However, one American League East team is not expected to pursue the veteran third baseman, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon.
“Stocked with infielders, the (Baltimore) Orioles are not expected to pursue Bregman,” The Athletic wrote on Thursday.
The Red Sox have the inside track to sign Bregman after having him on the team all of last season. He is beloved in the clubhouse and has spoken highly of his time in Boston.
He slashed .273/.360/.462 in 114 games in his first season with the team. However, his biggest impact may not have been for what he did on the field. He was praised as a leader by both veterans and young players.

“He’s like a coach, really,” Red Sox rookie Marcelo Mayer said to The Athletic in July. “I can’t really say enough of how much he’s helped not only me and Roman (Anthony), but the whole team. He has people coming in early and watching film, whether that’s me, (Jarren) Duran or whoever it may be. And I think he just sees the game at a super advanced level compared to most people.”
Re-signing Bregman would be a wise move for the Red Sox. He showcased that he is still one of the best third basemen in baseball this year, and the Red Sox have money to spend on him. The Red Sox traded Rafael Devers and the remainder of his $313 million contract earlier this year, giving them more room to work with this winter.
