The Boston Red Sox struggled to hit for power late in the season, and they could make that an area of focus this offseason.

The Red Sox have a great selection of power hitters to choose from this offseason if adding power is truly a priority for Craig Breslow. The team traded away its best power hitter last season when Rafael Devers was sent to the San Francisco Giants. However, with Kyle Schwarber, Pete Alonso, Munetaka Murakami and Eugenio Suárez all available, the Red Sox could finally replace Devers.

Choosing the right free agent could be the difference between a great season and a letdown. Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly predicted the Red Sox would land Alonso on a five-year, $145 million deal this winter.

“Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow is looking for a middle-of-the-order bat for manager Alex Cora’s lineup, and Alonso may be the missing piece for a Boston group already budding with young talent, particularly if they can’t pry Kyle Schwarber away from the Phillies,” Kelly wrote on Monday.

Alonso has hit 264 career home runs. Last season, he raised his batting average by 32 points from 2024. He also played in 162 games for the second consecutive season. He could completely change the outlook of the Red Sox lineup.

Alonso is not a great defender, but the Red Sox could have him play more designated hitter moving forward. According to The Boston Globe’s Time Healey, Alonso is open to the idea of playing more designated hitter next year.

If Alonso is willing to play less first base, the Red Sox would be able to keep Triston Casas in the lineup by having him and Alonso split time at first base and designated hitter.
