The Boston Red Sox struggled to hit for power late in the season, and could make adding a power hitter a priority this offseason. The team ranked 29th in home runs in August and September.
Lucky for the Red Sox, there is no shortage of power hitters in this year’s free agent class. Pete Alonso, Kyle Schwarber and Eugenio Suárez are all available, but Alonso may make the most sense as a fit. Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter predicted the Red Sox would sign him.
Triston Casas suffered a season-ending injury this year, and he could miss some time. The Red Sox could have a hole at first base that Alonso could fill. When Casas returns, Alonso could slot in as a designated hitter, something his agent said he is more open to doing moving forward.
Alonso is a five-time All-Star and won his first career Silver Slugger last season. He hit 38 home runs and collected 126 RBIs. He is one of the best power hitters in baseball, ranking third in home runs since his debut in 2019.
Schwarber would also be a great addition, but he would limit Alex Cora’s flexibility with the lineup. Unlike Alonso, Schwarber is a full-time designated hitter. Alonso will not be cheap to sign, but he is an addition that could change the complexion of the Red Sox’s lineup.

In seven seasons with the Mets, Alonso had an .857 OPS and 264 home runs. He is the franchise’s all-time home run leader. He proved last season he can do more than just rely on power, raising his batting average by 32 points from 2024.
Alonso also posts consistently. He has never missed more than 10 games in a season, making him a reliable player for Cora and the Red Sox. There is no shortage of star power in the American League East, and the Red Sox could benefit from adding more elite hitters.
