Craig Breslow has strongly indicated the Red Sox will go big-fish hunting this offseason, with improving the starting rotation a top priority.
But who could be on Boston’s radar?
The topic was discussed during a Wednesday night segment on MLB Network. Host Gregg Caserta began by suggesting Seattle Mariners starter Brian Woo as a potential trade candidate to fill the No. 3 spot in the Red Sox rotation. Caserta then asked Jake Peavy to identify a potential trade target to slot behind Garrett Crochet as Boston’s No. 2 starter.
“I think it’s Joe Ryan, for me,” Peavy said about the Minnesota Twins ace. ” … Joe Ryan’s fastball — we know they love to spin it over in Boston. Joe Ryan’s fastball-oriented, plays up in a big way.”
Caserta then set up Al Leiter to talk about Milwaukee Brewers star Freddy Peralta, a two-time All-Star who reportedly could join Ryan on the trade block.

“I like Freddy a lot,” Leiter said. ” … Every year, it just seems like he’s right there in the front end. … Completely legit stuff. I think he would be a great complement to Garrett Crochet as the righty-lefty.”
Finally, Peavy suggested Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara, who underwent Tommy John surgery two years ago and struggled throughout last season. Peavy believes the 30-year-old still could regain his pre-injury form — especially if he joins a team like the Red Sox.

“I think Sandy Alcantara’s name is interesting, as well,” Peavy said. ” … This is a Cy Young Award winner just a few years ago. He’s one year off injury. … You get thrust into that market, into Fenway Park, it gets the best out of you if you want it and (are) ready for it.”
Time will tell whether the Red Sox add another top starting pitcher this offseason, but Breslow’s recent comments and the accompanying speculation make it easy to dream big.
