The Boston Red Sox are reportedly still pursuing Alex Bregman, and he is among their top priorities.
The top of the free agent market has stalled out as stars like Bregman, Kyle Tucker, Bo Bichette and Cody Bellinger await new deals. The market has slightly changed after Kyle Schwarber and Pete Alonso signed, and ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel projected Bregman to sign a five-year, $170 million deal.
Bregman is one of the best free agents available, and arguably the best infielder. Bichette is a great option for teams, but his defense is a real concern. Bregman opted out of two years and $40 million remaining on his contract in hopes of finding a more lucrative deal.
It will be nearly impossible for Bregman to find a deal that pays him close to his previous deal in terms of average annual value. However, he would likely be okay with that as long as his next contract guarantees him more years.
A five-year, $170 million deal for Bregman would be the sixth-largest third base contract in all of baseball. He had a resurgent season, and the Red Sox know firsthand what type of impact Bregman can have on their team.

“We had the chance to see up close what Alex can bring to a clubhouse, and what he can bring to the field,” Craig Breslow said on MLB Network on Dec. 10. “He emerged as a leader, especially among those young players. His impact on our team was huge. We obviously remain engaged in conversations, but how things will go, we’re not sure.”
Bringing Bregman back would have a huge impact on the Red Sox, but perhaps they are waiting for Bo Bichette to sign and potentially set the market for Bregman. Bregman will turn 32 next season, but he proved he can still be an All-Star with his play last season.
The American League is full of stars, and the Toronto Blue Jays have been very aggressive this winter. Losing Bregman would be a huge blow in such a tight division.
