The Boston Red Sox have made plenty of impactful trades this offseason, but have yet to make a major move in free agency.
According to The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier, the Red Sox have their eyes on a handful of infielders, hoping to add some more production to their lineup. However, Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter noted that Alex Bregman is the most “logical target.”
Bregman is reportedly the Red Sox’s “Plan A” in free agency, and rightfully so. He signed with them last offseason and proved to be a great addition. He was named an All-Star for the first time since 2019 and was an overall great presence in their lineup.
He slashed .273/.360/.462 on the year, but he was on pace to have an even better season before his quad injury. Before his injury, he had a .299 batting average and was top ten in baseball for OPS.
Off the field, Bregman was a great leader for the Red Sox. The Red Sox had plenty of young players, and they raved about Bregman’s leadership and commitment to getting better.

The Red Sox have Marcelo Mayer to play third base if they are unable to re-sign Bregman, but given that he is their top priority, they figure to be motivated to get a deal done. It’s hard to argue that the Red Sox are a better team without Bregman.
The three-time All-Star is not the best free agent available, but he may be the best fit for the Red Sox. They already know what he brings to the table. It will likely take a long-term deal for Bregman, which may be outside of Craig Breslow’s comfort zone for a player of Bregman’s age.
