The last time the Boston Celtics faced the Detroit Pistons, they walked out with an impressive 117-114 win. Unfortunately for Joe Mazzulla’s team, things went differently during its 112-105 defeat on Monday, Dec. 15.

For the past two games, the Celtics have shot under 35% from the perimeter and have struggled to assert themselves on the offensive end. Against a Pistons team with the best record in the Eastern Conference, the Celtics’ poor shooting cost them.

During his postgame news conference, Cunningham spoke about his team being able to even the score with the Celtics. The two teams are now tied 1-1 in their season series.

“Definitely,” Cunningham said when asked if his team had more motivation following their previous loss. “Definitely wanted to come back, have that game back, you know, get that game back. So obviously, they’ve been playing good basketball, so it was a good test for us. Great win for us.”

Boston’s next game comes against a Miami Heat team that has been playing some inspired offensive basketball. If they fall to Erik Spoelstra’s team, it will be on a three-game slide, and all the momentum they built from the end of November through the start of December will be gone.

Mazzulla’s team must learn from its loss to Detroit. It must find ways to generate offense when the three-ball isn’t falling. Otherwise, Celtics fans will be in for a bumpy season full of false promises.

The Pistons are proving to be one of the surprise teams of the season. Their younger talents are coming of age, and they’re incredibly well coached. Nevertheless, the Celtics still have a chance to secure a season series win over Motor City, and that should be all the motivation they need for the next time they face off against Cunningham and Co.
