Baylor Scheierman is in his second season with the Boston Celtics. He was drafted with the 30th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. The 25-year-old has suited up for 21 games during the 2025-26 campaign, and while he’s flashed some upside, he’s also struggled at times.

During a recent post-practice news conference, Scheierman gave a thoughtful answer when asked how players on the outskirts of the rotation look to improve their game.

“I think, one, it starts with the work here before practice and after practice and on off days, and before we go to the plane,” Scheierman said, via CLNS Media. “I think that’s when you continue to get your player development in, continue to make strides in your game and then, when you’re in the game, you just try to take it for what it is. If the opportunity comes, you try to make the most of it. I think I’ve gotten a lot better this year at being better in those pockets.”

In recent years, the Celtics have proven themselves as a franchise capable of developing and nurturing young talent. Jordan Walsh, in his third season with the Celtics, is having a breakout year. Neemias Queta developed with the Maine Celtics before earning a full-time contract. Sam Hauser has gone from an undrafted rookie to an NBA champion and elite sharpshooter.

Clearly, Scheierman is in the perfect situation to continue expanding his game. However, he must continue to perform when given the opportunity on the court. Fortunately for the Creighton product, his diverse skill set allows him to impact games in a variety of ways. He can rebound, create shots off the dribble for himself and others, and he can stretch the floor.

Boston has plenty of minutes up for grabs this season. Brad Stevens ushered in a retooling phase for the franchise this summer. However, Joe Mazzulla isn’t going to hand players significant roles. They must earn it, both during practice and by maximizing the minutes they’re given on any given night.

With just over a season of NBA basketball under his belt, it’s too early to judge whether Scheierman will be a hit or a miss for Boston. Still, if he continues to approach his development with a focus on effort, commitment and hustle, he could find himself earning a bigger slice of the rotation, either this season or next.
