The Boston Celtics, despite supposedly being in the middle of a gap year, currently sit in third place in the Eastern Conference standings heading into play on Wednesday. The team has looked great as of late, and while they deserve much of the credit, the front office also should get a pat on the back for the construction of this roster.

For the past couple of years, Boston has generally been believed to have one of the best front offices in the NBA. After Brad Stevens moved from the team’s head coach to their president of basketball operations, he has done a great job of assembling talent for the C’s.

That has continued in the 2025-26 campaign, even though the widespread belief was that the team would not be as good as it had been in recent years. With the Celtics exceeding expectations once again, though, their front office was voted the second-best group in the league in a poll conducted by The Athletic of 36 executives across the league.

“Boston continues to garner solid marks around the league today, after Stevens blew most of that core to smithereens last summer, trading Holiday to Portland and Porziņģis to Atlanta and letting Horford go to Golden State,” David Aldridge wrote.

“(This was done to) avoid the second-apron threshold and its crushing penalties and to quickly reset following Tatum’s Achilles injury in Boston’s conference semifinal series with New York. The resulting gap season made sense both for the short- and long-term calendars of the Two Jays respective primes.”

The only team the C’s came in behind was the Oklahoma City Thunder, and considering how much talent they currently have, and the treasure chest of draft picks they also possess, there’s no shame in finishing as the runner-up to them.

While Boston appeared to be in trouble after Jayson Tatum suffered a torn Achilles tendon in the playoffs last season, the team has proven that it is still in a great spot. That is due in large part to the work of Stevens and the front office, and it will be interesting to see what moves they make next in preparation for Tatum’s eventual return to the court.
