The Boston Celtics have surprised many folks by cruising to a 15-10 start to the 2025-26 campaign, which is good for third place in the Eastern Conference currently. Making their success on the court so far this season even more impressive is the fact that they have done it without their best player, Jayson Tatum.
After suffering a torn Achilles tendon in the playoffs last season, Tatum began an arduous rehab journey that was expected to hold him out for the entire year. However, he appears to be well ahead of schedule when it comes to his injury rehab, and reports indicate he wants to play this season.
Given how frequently fans have seen Tatum getting work in on the court as late, some folks believe it’s a matter of when, not if, he returns to action this year. However, according to one team insider, it sounds like the C’s still intend on proceeding with caution when it comes to their franchise player.
“Within the organization he continues to indicate that he would like to return this season,” Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe reported. “It probably falls somewhere between possible and likely, but a league source stressed that the team remains several steps away from even considering the decision.
Tatum must still reach several mile markers in his recovery before discussions about a return can be considered.”

Considering how well Boston has played to begin the year, getting Tatum back could instantly make the team a legit title contender. The team isn’t losing sight of its long-term future, though, which could ultimately lead to him being held out for the entire year.
The better the Celtics play, though, the more hope fans will have that he can come back at some point this season. After suffering a tough loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday, the C’s will look to get back in the win column when they take on the Detroit Pistons on Monday night.
