As a late first-round draft pick, Hugo Gonzalez is quietly piecing together an impressive rookie season. The 19-year-old forward had his best night so far, helping the Boston Celtics snap their two-game losing streak in a 129-116 win over the Miami Heat.
Gonzalez ended the night with 10 points, 8 rebounds and 2 steals while shooting 4-of-7 from the field. He also chipped in with some stellar defensive possessions, showcasing his all-around versatility.
During his postgame news conference, veteran guard Derrick White praised Gonzalez for his all-action display and his performance to begin the season.
“Yeah, I saw what everyone was saying about him (Hugo González) during summer league, that he just never stops,” White said, via CLNS Media. “So, it’s kind of what I expected when I got here, and it’s been true. Since day one it’s been true. He came in and competes at a high level, plays hard, obviously makes some mistakes, but you never have to question his effort. He was big-time for us tonight—he kind of changed the game with his energy. He does a lot of things for us, getting those 50-50 balls and just creating turnovers. I love the way he competes.”
Gonzalez has spent the opening months of the 2025-26 season locked in a three-way battle for minutes at the forward position. He’s competing with Josh Minott and Jordan Walsh, who are both having impressive years. However, Gonzalez’s defensive versatility and experience as a professional — having played for Real Madrid in Spain before moving to the NBA — have given Celtics fans reason for optimism.

The win over Miami gives Boston an opportunity to build some momentum. The game marked the first night of a back-to-back, with Joe Mazzulla’s squad set to face the Toronto Raptors on Saturday.
Boston will need Gonzalez to continue building on the strong start to his rookie season. He could emerge as a core part of the rotation in the coming years.
