The Boston Red Sox have already started their offseason work, and they are expected to be busy as free agency continues to heat up. One player the Sox are looking to reunite with is star slugger Kyle Schwarber, who is fresh off another strong 2025 campaign with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Schwarber briefly spent time with the Red Sox in 2021 after getting picked up at the trade deadline. The team let him walk in free agency, and he ended up signing with the Phillies. In four years with the team, Schwarber hit 187 total home runs, including a career-high 56 last season.

As one of the premier power hitters in the game, Schwarber is going to get paid this offseason. According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Red Sox are in the running for Schwarber’s signature, but at this point, it seems more likely that he will re-sign with Philadelphia.

“Schwarber’s market is healthy,” Passan said in a post on Threads. “He’s going to get years, and he’s going to get AAV, and at this point, he might be the likeliest of the big free agents to sign first.

Unclear if something gets done before the meetings, but I’d be surprised if they end and he doesn’t have a team. The Phillies remain the favorite, with Boston, Cincinnati, the Mets and others in the mix.”

The Sox have money to spend this offseason, and their familiarity with Schwarber could help a deal get done. The Phillies are believed to be more desperate for his signature, though, and with old friend Dave Dombrowski running their front office, it’s clear he’s not going to be deterred by his price tag.

Boston has remained linked to several of the other top bats in free agency, such as Pete Alonso and Alex Bregman. While they should aim to remain in the running for Schwarber, the front office may be better off turning its attention to another option.
