After the Boston Red Sox traded for Willson Contreras on December 21, fans began wondering what would come next for the Red Sox.
According to multiple reports, Boston is still seeking another bat. A reunion with All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman is presumably the highest priority for the Red Sox’s front office, but Boston has also been linked to All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte in plenty of trade buzz this offseason.
Naturally, fans and pundits have been debating which of the two star infielders would be a better fit in Boston in 2026 and beyond.
Former MLB pitcher A.J. Ramos offered his two cents on this topic during an MLB Network radio segment this week.
“You get a guy that’s been there before in Alex Bregman … ask anybody that played with him last year in that locker room how beneficial it was to have him in that locker room,” Ramos said.

“I feel like I would still go with Bregman, just because of familiarity … but in Ketel Marte, I’d say I like his skills a bit better than Bregman … he brings a little bit different type of energy … it’s a close one, but I think I’m going with Bregman over Marte.”
It’s an interesting debate. Both Bregman and Marte are three-time All-Stars, and they are almost the same age, with Marte being older than Bregman by about six months.

The biggest difference here is that Bregman is a free agent, and Marte is not. The Red Sox wouldn’t have to give up any assets to acquire Bregman, whereas the Arizona Diamondbacks would surely demand young pitching from Boston in exchange for their best overall player in Marte.
