Bobby Dalbec will reportedly seek a fresh start outside the United States.

Nippon Professional Baseball’s Yomiuri Giants signed Dalbec to a contract, according to Japanese outlets Gaijin Baseball and the Yakyu Cosmopolitan. MassLive’s Chris Cotillo relayed that the former Boston Red Sox corner infielder will make over $1 million guaranteed.

Dalbec reached the majors in style, slugging .600 in 92 plate appearances as a rookie in 2020. He continued to power Boston’s lineup with 25 home runs in 2021, but his production then went downhill.

Over the next three seasons, Dalbec batted .198/.269/.330 with 14 home runs and a minus-1.1 fWAR in 175 games. He struck out on 189 of his 499 plate appearances with just 41 walks.

Dalbec signed a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox before the 2025 season, but he lasted just seven games in the majors before getting designated for assignment in early May. The right-hander played the rest of the season in Triple-A for the Milwaukee Brewers and Kansas City Royals, totaling 20 home runs in 93 combined games for the two organizations.

Dalbec will look to resurrect his career in Japan. While MLB teams should be aware of his power upside, the 30-year-old must fix his growing contact woes to earn another big league opportunity.

He’s not the only ex-Red Sox player on his new club. Dalbec will become teammates with Bryan Mata, a former top pitching prospect who signed with the Giants earlier this month.
