The Winter Meetings are underway in Orlando, Florida, and the Boston Red Sox appear to be in on almost everyone, from Pete Alonso and Kyle Schwarber to Bo Bichette and Ketel Marte.

While landing a new superstar would be exciting, the Red Sox are still focused on bringing back a familiar face, according to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal.

On Tuesday, Rosenthal provided an update on Boston’s offseason targets for The Athletic (subscription required).

“Free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman still appears to be the Red Sox’s No. 1 target, in part because of the defensive upgrade he provided over Rafael Devers,” Rosenthal wrote.

Bregman, 31, is a free agent after opting out of the remaining two years and $80 million on his deal with Boston. The Red Sox are considered favorites to sign him this winter after a successful 2025 campaign for both sides.

While Boston is exploring other options as well, it’s encouraging to hear that reuniting with Bregman is still the club’s top priority. Not only was he an All-Star third baseman last season, but he was also a valued clubhouse leader and a de facto assistant coach for the team’s young stars.

With the Red Sox looking to improve their run prevention, losing a Gold Glove winner like Bregman would be a significant blow to their defense.

Bregman was a free agent last offseason as well, and many of the same teams remain interested in him. Boston won out last winter, but time will tell if he chooses the Red Sox again.
