The Boston Celtics have surprised many folks by posting a 15-10 record through their first 25 games, which is good for third place in the Eastern Conference. The C’s success is due in large part to several unheralded contributors stepping up and taking on more responsibility, with center Neemias Queta being a part of that group.
Over the offseason, Boston lost virtually its entire big man rotation, as Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford and Luke Kornet all found new homes. While guys like Luka Garza and Chris Boucher were brought to town, that left Queta as the top option to start at center for the Celtics.
Leaning on Queta may have seemed like a risk, but he’s delivered so far this season, as he’s averaging 10.1 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game while shooting 65.2% from the field. It’s been quite a change of pace for Queta after he averaged just 13.9 minutes per game last season, but he’s relished the opportunity to take on such a big role for his team.
“I don’t think there’s a moment where I don’t think about it like that,” Queta said when discussing his starting role with the C’s. “I’m always appreciative of the opportunity. It’s not any franchise. It’s the Boston Celtics. It’s the biggest franchise in the NBA.”
In the long run, Queta probably profiles more as a bench big man, but he’s proven he can handle more responsibilities for Boston so far this season. If he can keep on improving, he could solidify himself as a key piece of the team’s future.

He isn’t the flashiest player, but Queta’s two-way contributions have been tough to miss so far this year. He will look to continue his strong start to the season when the Celtics square off against the Detroit Pistons on Monday night.
