Drake Maye didn’t pat himself on the back for making a standout play outside the pocket on Sunday.

Maye had one of his quietest games of the season, tallying a season-low 155 passing yards in a Week 15 loss to the Buffalo Bills. The quarterback also scored two rushing touchdowns and served a vital role in the offense’s biggest play.

Maye went above and beyond the typical quarterback duties when running 50 yards downfield to block for TreVeyon Henderson on a 65-yard touchdown. NFL Next Gen Stats said Maye reached 20.58 mph on the play, the fastest speed of his career.

The 23-year-old offered a predictably humble response to that feat on Wednesday, via CLNS Media.

‘I don’t know if that’s true or not,” Maye said of his max speed. “I don’t know if I ever hit 20, but I just tried to get down there. I’m always a little faster when somebody’s chasing me or I’m trying to get out in front of somebody.”

Maye prevented Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White from chasing down Henderson, but he wouldn’t take any credit for assisting the rookie’s touchdown.

“I think TreVeyon would have scored anyway,” Maye added. “I don’t know if he really needed my block, so I just felt like I could try to go and help in any way. I was trying not to get in the way.”

Henderson celebrated Maye’s hustle in his post-game press conference, per the team transcript.

“I just think a play like that shows a lot about Drake Maye, the type of player and person he is, and how unselfish he is,” Henderson said. “That’s why when I got in the end zone, the first thing I did was point up to God, of course, but then point at him and just let him know I really appreciate that, appreciate his effort.”
