Rob Gronkowski has already retired from the NFL multiple times, seemingly for good after signing a one-day contract with the New England Patriots in November.
The 36-year-old former tight end hasn’t played an NFL game in nearly four years and seems to have moved on with his life. With Philip Rivers coming out of retirement to join the Indianapolis Colts this week at age 44, however, would Gronkowski ever consider something similar?
On Wednesday, the four-time Super Bowl champ told NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Judy Battista what it would take for that to happen.
“You wanna know something? I could give them looks on the practice squad,” Gronkowski said, citing Rivers. “I would maybe go back if a team was like, ‘Hey, can you give us some great looks on the scout team? And we’re gonna pay you a legitimate bonus, like a million bucks or something bonus right on the spot. And all you gotta do is practice Wednesday, Thursday and Friday on the practice squad and show us some legitimate looks of the tight ends that we’re going against, and just go out there and practice and have fun and get our guys better.’

“That actually might be a pretty cool case. I might have to think about that,” Gronkowski continued. “The chance of that happening is one percent, but I would have to just think about it and lay my options on the table.”
A million dollars to practice football three days a week would be a pretty good gig, even for a multimillionaire like Gronkowski. An NFL team is unlikely to make that kind of offer, but it at least opens the door slightly for Gronkowski to potentially return to the practice field someday.
In the meantime, all eyes will be on Rivers to see if he suits up against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
