The MLB offseason is officially past the halfway point, as the first Spring Training game is now closer than the final out of the World Series.

It’s been an interesting winter for the Boston Red Sox, who are coming off their best season and first playoff berth in four years.

On the one hand, the Red Sox have swung multiple big trades, trading for Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras and Johan Oviedo. On the other hand, they’ve yet to re-sign Alex Bregman and are the only team that hasn’t signed a free agent to a Major League contract this offseason.

Boston remains the favorite to sign Bregman and has been linked to other stars as well, including Bo Bichette and Ketel Marte. Barring a major move by the end of today, however, the club is ending 2025 on a relatively quiet note.

The Red Sox still have time to add to their roster over the next few months, as they didn’t sign Bregman until mid-February last winter. In the meantime, however, their offseason still feels incomplete, especially compared to what some of their AL East rivals have done.

Regardless, Boston has added several established stars to bolster a young group that took a major step forward under Alex Cora last season. Gray and Contreras are both three-time All-Stars coming off good seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, while Oviedo impressed for the Pittsburgh Pirates after returning from injury last season.

They’ll try to help the Red Sox build on a promising 2025 and supplement the club’s talented core. Led by Roman Anthony, Garrett Crochet and other young stars, Boston appears poised to contend again in 2026 and for years to come.
