The Boston Red Sox have not made a major splash in free agency yet, but have added key players through trade.

Somnny Gray, Johan Oviedo and Willson Contreras highlight the Red Sox’s additions. However, Craig Breslow has made it known he wants to add another bat to the lineup. There are great options available through trade and on the open market.

While Ketel Marte or Bo Bichette would be great additions, CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson predicted they would re-sign Alex Bregman.

“Despite missing nearly two months on account of a strained quad, Bregman had a strong enough showing with the Red Sox to opt out of his three-year contract,” Anderson wrote on Tuesday. “He’s been linked to most of the same teams from last winter — the Red Sox, naturally, as well as the (Chicago) Cubs and (Detroit) Tigers — and some surprising clubs like the (Toronto) Blue Jays and (Arizona) Diamondbacks. Inertia is a most powerful force, making Boston the pick here. Wherever he lands, he’s likely to set off a domino effect.”

Bregman was not only a great player for the Red Sox, but he was also a tremendous leader. He has been tabbed as the Red Sox’s top priority all offseason, and the Red Sox still seem like the favorites to land him.

His market has no shortage of suitors at this point, but the Breslow has spoken highly of Bregman, leading many to believe Boston’s intentions to bring him back are genuine.

“We had the chance to see up close what Alex can bring to a clubhouse, and what he can bring to the field,” Craig Breslow said on MLB Network on Dec. 10. “He emerged as a leader, especially among those young players. His impact on our team was huge. We obviously remain engaged in conversations, but how things will go, we’re not sure.”

Bregman had his best season since his All-Star 2019 season. He posted an .821 OPS after having a .795 OPS over the last five seasons. Before his quad injury, he was hitting .299 and was top-ten in OPS.
