The Red Sox reportedly made an offer to Pete Alonso, but it wasn’t enough to get the veteran slugger to sign in Boston.
Alonso is finalizing a five-year, $155 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles, as first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Alonso’s reported pact comes one day after Kyle Schwarber re-signed with the Philadelphia Phillies on a five-year, $150 million deal.
The Boston Globe’s Tim Healey on Wednesday afternoon offered some intel into Boston’s offer to Alonso.
“The Red Sox’ offer to Alonso was for fewer years and significantly less money, sources said,” Healey wrote.
The Red Sox insider did not specifically report the figures of the offer, however.

Boston was viewed as the front-runner to land Alonso, along with the incumbent Mets. New York reportedly did not make an offer to the franchise’s leader in home runs.
The Orioles reportedly offered Schwarber the same five-year, $150 million deal he landed with the Phillies. After Baltimore didn’t sign Schwarber on Tuesday, the group quickly changed gears and signed the only lineup-changing bat left on the open market.
