After upgrading their rotation in recent weeks, the Boston Red Sox are expected to turn their attention to their offense.
One potential area of need is first base given Triston Casas’ recent injury history. The Red Sox have already been linked to Pete Alonso and other big-name first basemen in free agency.
Based on a recent report, they also appear to be considering acquiring one through the trade market.
Susan Slusser of The San Francisco Chronicle reported on Sunday that Boston likes San Francisco Giants first base prospect Bryce Eldridge a lot. However, she added that the Red Sox appear to be more focused on signing Alonso.
Eldridge, 21, is the Giants’ No. 1 prospect according to MLB Pipeline. The former first-round draft pick debuted in September and played in 10 games for San Francisco, batting .107/.297/.179 with three hits, four RBI, seven walks and 13 strikeouts in 37 plate appearances.

While Eldridge has a lot of upside and could be a star someday, it makes sense why Boston is more interested in Alonso, who’s a proven elite slugger.
That said, the Red Sox could pivot to Eldridge if he’s still available and they miss out on Alonso. Craig Breslow and Buster Posey already have a working relationship after last season’s Rafael Devers trade, so perhaps they could strike another deal. Boston has plenty of starting pitching and outfielders to offer in a trade if needed.

In the meantime, the Red Sox will continue to pursue Alonso at this week’s Winter Meetings.
