Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow knows he needs to add another bat to the lineup for 2026 and beyond.
The two leading candidates are third baseman Alex Bregman and Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette.
But which player makes the most sense?
Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each slugger.
Resume

In the end, Bregman has the advantage is two categories. So does Bichette. As you can tell, this isn’t exactly an easy decision for Breslow to make.

Both players will receive long-term contracts in the neighborhood of $30 million per year. If the Red Sox are looking for instant return on their investment, Bregman makes the most sense.
But if Boston is thinking long-term, Bichette is four years younger with more upside and potential.
Signing Bichette also comes with a bonus: It robs an American League East rival of a core player that helped the Blue Jays win the division title and advance to the 2025 World Series.
Making yourself better while simultaneously weakening a foe? It’s hard to deny Bichette to Boston is a win-win scenario for the Red Sox.
