The Boston Red Sox pulled off their second big trade of the offseason on Thursday night, as they acquired starting pitcher Johan Oviedo from the Pittsburgh Pirates as part of a five-player deal that included one of the Sox’s top prospects, Jhostynxon Garcia.
After acquiring Sonny Gray in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals in November, Boston has quickly solidified its starting rotation this offseason. However, according to a recent report, it doesn’t sound like the team will be making a move for one of its top trade targets, Joe Ryan of the Minnesota Twins.
Ryan has been linked to the Red Sox dating back to before the trade deadline last season, but to this point, a deal hasn’t materialized. It seems like it will stay that way, as it seems like the Twins intend on keeping Ryan and several of their other potential trade candidates.
“The Twins do not anticipate moving center fielder Byron Buxton or right-handers Joe Ryan and Pablo López, according to league sources briefed on their plans,” Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported. “Minnesota’s goal is to keep those players, build around them and compete in 2026.”
It’s worth noting, of course, that the Sox may not have been interested in Ryan after adding Gray and Oviedo to the mix. With two quick moves, Boston has completely revamped its starting rotation, which should allow the front office to focus on upgrading the team’s lineup now.

The majority of the top free agents are still on the open market, with the Red Sox continuing to be linked to Pete Alonso and Kyle Schwarber. As a result, it will be worth keeping tabs on them to see if they end up turning to free agency to make their next big move.
