The Boston Red Sox remain engaged on free-agent hitters, and Alex Bregman is still sitting on the open market. An MLB insider explained why a reunion makes sense.

Jon Morosi said Monday on MLB Network’s “Hot Stove” that he sees Boston as the team most likely to give Bregman a longer-term deal with a high average annual value.

“These signs continue to point that Bregman is likely having his best fit with the Red Sox,” Morosi said.

Morosi raised doubts over several other potential landing spots.

The Detroit Tigers have frequently surfaced as a suitor, but Morosi wondered if they’ll be too hindered by second baseman Gleyber Torres accepting the $22 million qualifying offer. Morosi also thinks the Chicago Cubs may be comfortable enough with Matt Shaw to bypass a free-agent signing.

While the Philadelphia Phillies have expressed interest in Bregman, Morosi suggested he was a “fallback option” to Kyle Schwarber. The National League East champions re-signed the star designated hitter to a five-year, $150 million contract.

The New York Mets loom because of their deep pockets, especially after losing star first baseman Pete Alonso to the Baltimore Orioles. However, they have since added Jorge Polanco to a two-year, $40 million deal.

Morosi reasoned that if the Mets were willing to give an infielder the lucrative long-term deal Bregman wants, they would have retained Alonso instead. That could leave Boston as the most realistic landing spot for the three-time All-Star.

“The Boston Red Sox, to me, (are) still the clearest and best option of all for Alex Bregman,” Morosi said.
