The New England Patriots are gearing up for the Super Bowl, while the team they defeated in the AFC Championship Game, the Denver Broncos, is making coaching changes.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported on Tuesday that the Broncos have parted ways with offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi.

Lombardi served as the Broncos offensive coordinator for the last three seasons and did an excellent job helping second-year quarterback Bo Nix develop into a standout player.

Denver didn’t have Nix in the AFC Championship because of an ankle injury he suffered in the divisional round. The Broncos started backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham and scored seven points vs. New England.

One reason the Broncos may have fired Lombardi is to promote quarterback coach Davis Webb to offensive coordinator.

Webb is a finalist for the Raiders head coaching position, but the Broncos may try to persuade him to stay by offering him the offensive coordinator role. This could be a more appealing option for him to remain in Denver for another season rather than seeking a head coaching opportunity elsewhere.

If the Broncos don’t promote Webb or the Raiders hire him, Denver will be an excellent landing spot for a handful of offensive coaching candidates.
