The Boston Red Sox reportedly tried to trade for Ketel Marte when he was available, but he has since been taken off the trade market, according to The Athletic.
However, that has not slammed the door shut on the Red Sox reportedly trading for him. According to The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, the Red Sox could circle back to him with a better offer if they can’t acquire a bat before opening day.
“Keep in mind, that stance could change with a robust trade offer, something that could come about if there is a major injury to a player in spring training and a team decides to revisit trade talks and offer closer to what Arizona was looking for in the beginning,” Bowden wrote of Marte being taken off the market.
“If the Red Sox don’t land Eugenio Suárez in free agency and can’t find another bat, they could easily circle back and make another run at Marte, as could the (New York) Yankees, (Detroit) Tigers and (Philadelphia) Phillies, all of whom expressed interest this offseason.”
It seems like Marte’s market could heat back up after Eugenio Suárez signs, and other options like Isaac Paredes and Brendan Donovan are dealt.

Marte will not be cheap, as the Red Sox likely already know. When they previously were engaging with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Marte was likely seen as a backup plan for Alex Bregman.
However, now that Bregman is gone, the Red Sox could up their offer to the Diamondbacks for Marte. He is a three-time All-Star and has won a Silver Slugger in each of the last two seasons.
He has 64 home runs since the start of 2024 and is exactly the type of hitter the Red Sox need in their lineup.
