The New York Post’s Jon Heyman recently identified four potential targets for the Boston Red Sox as they look to possibly trade for a bat: Nico Hoerner, Brendan Donovan, Isaac Paredes, and Eugenio Suarez.
On Monday, Morosi offered a slightly different list, removing the slugger Suarez and adding Hoerner’s teammate on the Chicago Cubs, infielder Matt Shaw.
Shaw’s 2025 season with the Cubs marked his MLB debut as a highly touted rookie third baseman. Drafted 13th overall in 2023, the 23-year-old broke camp with the team and started on Opening Day. His first half proved challenging, posting a .198 average with a .280 slugging in 63 games. However, Shaw rebounded strongly after the All-Star break, hitting .258 with 11 home runs, 29 RBI, and a .522 slugging in another 63 games.
Overall, he finished with a .226 average, 13 homers, 44 RBI, 17 stolen bases, and 3.1 WAR, while excelling defensively with 12 Defensive Runs Saved and earning a Gold Glove finalist nod. He placed ninth in NL Rookie of the Year voting. The Cubs reached the NLDS, but Shaw struggled in the playoffs, batting .118.

Entering 2026, Shaw’s career remains in its infancy, spanning just one big-league season after rapid minor-league ascents. With the Cubs signing Alex Bregman this offseason, Shaw may shift to a utility role, but a trade would also make sense for Chicago.
