The New England Patriots are knee deep in a historic playoff run with one more victory separating them from their first Super Bowl appearance this decade.
But before New England was knocking on the door of the AFC’s top seed, and before the Patriots had an MVP front-runner under center, the team was facing nationwide criticism on thier way to winning ten-straight games in the regular season.
One member of the media who was late to the party is NBC’s Matthew Berry. On “Sunday Night Football,” Berry told the panel of analysts pregame that despite an impressive opening six games, quarterback Drake Maye is “not Jayden Daniels.”
“There’s an excitement,” Patriots legend Devin McCourty said on “Sunday Night Football.” “Drake Maye, the best quarterback from the 2024 class, Matthew Berry!”
“Stop that,” Berry responded. “Let me know when Drake Maye gets to an (AFC) Championship Game.”

McCourty responded with a now-famous, “He plays in New England, they only count Super Bowls,” to which Berry doubled down, saying that he likes the Patriots’ young quarterback, but that he doesn’t compare to the Washington Commanders’ signal caller.
Now, more than three full months later, Berry is forced to face the music after Maye’s Patriots dismantled the Houston Texans with a 28-16 win in the divisional round.

“Ok Devin McCourty … Now you can talk to me,” Berry wrote in an X post. “I still have Faith in Five, of course, but what a season by Drake Maye and the Patriots. Congrats on a well earned AFC Championship berth.”
