Eric Gregory drew the short straw on Saturday.

The Patriots made a flurry of roster moves prior to their matchup with the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship, announcing that defensive lineman Leonard Taylor III and running back D’Ernest Johnson were elevated from the practice squad to the active roster, while sharing that defensive lineman Joshua Farmer (hamstring) and running back Terrell Jennings (concussion) would not be activated off injured reserve and that wide receiver Mack Hollins (abdomen) would be activated and will be available for Sunday.

Got it?

New England couldn’t complete those transactions without opening a spot on the active roster, however…

Gregory was placed on injured reserve in order to make room.

Gregory, 24, ultimately appeared in seven total games this season, including the wild-card victory over the Los Angeles Chargers — making eight total tackles while appearing in 36% of defensive snaps and 7.1% of special teams snaps in games he was active. The Patriots made him a healthy scratch in their divisional round victory over the Houston Texans.
