The Boston Red Sox have remained painfully quiet in free agency this offseason, with fans holding out hope that the team will make a big splash in the near future. While the team is struggling to lure big-name players to town currently, it may be closing in on a big move in the international prospect pool.

Over the past few years, the Sox have rebuilt their farm system from the ground up. It had yielded budding stars like Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer, while also allowing the front office to swing big trades for guys like Sonny Gray, Johan Oviedo and Willson Contreras this offseason.

Boston isn’t having much success when it comes to signing major-league level players, but that could change with one big move. In the meantime, the front office is continuing to explore other avenues for bringing talent to town, as reports indicate the team has emerged as the frontrunner for highly touted Brazilian pitching prospect Claudio Pereira.

Pereira will sign on Jan. 15, with the expectation being that he will get $500,000 from the team. While it would be a while until he potentially breaks into the majors, Pereira’s lanky frame could help him turn into a top prospect for the organization.

At the major-league level, Boston needs to find a way to add another big bat or two to its lineup. Alex Bregman is still available in free agency, and the team could conceivably pull off another trade for a guy like Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte.

The future looks bright for the Red Sox, but it’s clear that fans of the team want to compete for a World Series in 2026. Whether or not that’s possible will likely be determined by the work the front office does over the remainder of the offseason.
