The Boston Red Sox reportedly signed star free agent left-handed starter Ranger Suarez to a $130 million contract over five years.

Boston has focused on adding pitching this offseason, as the Red Sox have traded for Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo to bolster their rotation. Following the reporting signing of Suarez, ESPN MLB analyst David Schoenfield called Boston’s rotation the best in baseball.

“Now for the analysis that Red Sox fans should like,” Schoenfield wrote on Wednesday. “The Sox may have the best rotation in the majors. In fact, even before this signing, FanGraphs projected Boston as the top rotation with 17.2 projected WAR, just ahead of the Dodgers’ 17.1.

“Suarez bumps up that figure another couple of wins, with the group lining up as Garrett Crochet, Sonny Gray, Suarez, Brayan Bello, Johan Oviedo, Payton Tolle and Connelly Early, with plenty of depth in Kyle Harrison plus Patrick Sandoval and Kutter Crawford coming off injuries.”

Although Schoenfield said the Red Sox have the best rotation in baseball, he gave the reported signing a B- grade.

Suarez went 12-8 with a 3.20 ERA in 26 starts last season with the Philadelphia Phillies. The left-hander was named to the National League All-Star team in 2024 when he posted a 3.46 ERA across 27 starts.

Suarez will join a rotation that is led by Garrett Crochet, who went 18-5 with a 2.59 ERA in 32 starts last season.
