With spring training three weeks away, Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow might not be done exploring offseason acquisitions.

According to The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier, Boston has checked in on Chicago Cubs infielders Nico Hoerner and Matt Shaw.

Hoerner delivered a strong 2025 season for the Cubs, batting .297 (ranking 8th in the NL) with 178 hits, 29 doubles, four triples, seven home runs, 61 RBI, 89 runs scored, and 29 stolen bases across 156 games.

His .345 on-base percentage and .394 slugging produced a .739 OPS, contributing to a 6.2 WAR performance that included a Gold Glove award and 19th-place finish in NL MVP voting.

Through seven MLB seasons (all with the Cubs since his 2019 debut), he has accumulated a .282 average, 738 hits, 36 home runs, 278 RBI, and 131 stolen bases, establishing himself as a reliable contact hitter, elite defender at second base, and consistent base stealer.

Shaw, the Cubs’ 2023 first-round pick (No. 13 overall), made his MLB debut in March 2025 during the Tokyo Series and played 126 games, primarily at third base. He posted a .226 average with 89 hits, 21 doubles, three triples, 13 home runs, 44 RBI, 57 runs, and 17 stolen bases in 393 at-bats, finishing with a .295 on-base percentage, .394 slugging, and .689 OPS.

After a brief early-season stint in Triple-A Iowa (.286 with six homers in 24 games), Shaw showed flashes of power and speed as a rookie, becoming the only 2025 rookie with at least 10 home runs and 10 steals.
