Alex Bregman’s tenure with the Boston Red Sox was a short one. According to Jeff Passan, the Chicago Cubs agreed to a five-year, $175 million deal with Bregman, tying him to the Cubs through 2030.
Bregman hit .273 with 18 home runs in 114 games in 2025 for the Red Sox. He was viewed as a leader in the clubhouse, with several players expressing their desire for him to return at Saturday’s Fenway Fest. Manager Alex Cora said the ball was in Bregman’s court regarding a potential return.
After missing out on the third baseman, the Red Sox will turn their sights towards Bo Bichette and Eugenio Suarez. Bichette is viewed as a second baseman, which would likely shift Marcelo Mayer to the hot corner. Boston will need to find a way to replace Bregman’s production on both sides of the ball, via trade or free agency.
