The Boston Red Sox officially announced the addition of pitcher Ranger Suárez on Wednesday.
Suárez, whose contract details were revealed slightly before his introductory press conference, had an opportunity to speak with members of the media for the first time since agreeing to the deal at Fenway Park. It’s usually a pretty standard affair, but one thing that stood out were the opening remarks from Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow.
“Ranger has been an excellent starting pitcher in a very tough division for a very long time… but what really stands out is the body of work in the postseason,” Breslow said, as seen on NESN. “We look forward to him continuing to build that postseason resume here over the next five years.
“… Ranger is the type of guy who can roll out of bed and throw a bullpen and not miss a single spot… and the other thing that stood out was this big sense of humor that stood out. We look forward to that personality coming out.”
Suárez certainly has left his mark on the postseason, as he currently carries the sixth-lowest postseason ERA (1.48) in the history of Major League Baseball — with a minimum of 40 innings pitched — trailing only Mariano Rivera (0.70), Sandy Koufax (0.95), Christy Mathewson (0.97), Eddie Plank (1.32) and Stephen Strasburg (1.46).
