The Boston Red Sox have been busy this offseason, but there is still work to be done. Their top area of need is another big bat for their lineup, with the most logical fit being a reunion between them and All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman.
Early in free agency, the Sox’s front office reportedly focused heavily on signing Kyle Schwarber and Pete Alonso, but they struck out on both guys. That forced them to turn back to Bregman, with both sides being open to reuniting in free agency.
At this stage of the game, Boston appears to be the favorite to sign Bregman. However, they will face some competition for his services, and according to a recent report, it sounds like the Chicago Cubs are lurking as a surprise suitor for the talented slugger.
“While the Red Sox are the favorites to bring back Bregman … the Cubs remain in pursuit of Bregman for the second consecutive winter,” Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported.
The Cubs have their own big-name free agent that they are attempting to re-sign in Kyle Tucker, but should he land elsewhere, Bregman would suddenly be a logical fit for them. For the time being, though, Bregman makes the most sense for the Red Sox.

Bregman was a great fit for Boston during his lone season with the team, but bringing him back to town this offseason is going to be costly. Whether or not the front office can find common ground with him could determine how far this team goes in 2026.
