The Boston Red Sox suffered a tough blow to their offseason plans when losing Alex Bregman on Saturday night.
Bregman reportedly signed a five-year, $175 million contract to join the Chicago Cubs after one season in Boston. The Red Sox had reportedly made an “aggressive” offer to retain the All-Star third baseman.
Jon Heyman provided more information on Boston’s Bregman pursuit after the bombshell signing. The insider said on MLB Network that the Red Sox offered Bregman approximately $160 million to stay.
Heyman noted that some of that money could have been deferred, but that doesn’t appear to be an issue for Bregman. According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenhal, $70 million of Bregman’s $175 million deal with the Cubs is deferred.
Rosenthal believes Bregman will make around $30 million annually in present-day value. He received $40 million in the first season of a three-year deal before opting out this offseason.

Boston won’t bring back Bregman, who received his third All-Star nod in 2025 following a strong start. The two-time World Series champion cooled down after returning from a quad injury, but he still batted .273/.360/.462 with 18 home runs in 495 plate appearances.
While the Red Sox acquired first baseman Willson Contreras and starting pitcher Sonny Gray in separate trades with the St. Louis Cardinals, they’ve yet to make a free-agent splash.
The Red Sox also missed out on Pete Alonso and Kyle Schwarber, so their targets are dwindling. Bo Bichette may represent their last chance to bolster their 2026 lineup with a high-end signing.
