The Boston Red Sox are reportedly still looking to acquire a bat, and they could be a great fit for a Washington Nationals All-Star.
After losing Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs, the Red Sox have had reported interest in multiple infielders. They reportedly agreed to a deal with Isiah Kiner-Falefa, but he is not really the type of bat that is going to change their lineup, even though he can be a valuable player.
There are still some options on the trade block, and ESPN’s David Schoenfield tabbed CJ Abrams as a target. He was an All-Star in 2024, and the Nationals could be looking to start fresh. Abrams has three years of club control, and the Red Sox look further out from contention than that.
“First off, new Nationals president of baseball operations Paul Toboni was hired away from the Red Sox, where he had served as an assistant GM the past two years and director of amateur scouting before that,” wrote Schoenfield on Friday. “He obviously knows the system, and the familiarity between the two front offices could help a deal come together.”
Last year, Abrams hit 19 home runs and had a better OPS and batting average than in his All-Star season. He is not a great defensive shortstop, posting a minus-11 outs above average last season, but the Red Sox don’t need him to play shortstop.

They could move him to second base, leaving Trevor Story at shortstop and Marcelo Mayer at third. Abrams is a 20-homer bat who could thrive with less pressure on him.
He is only 25 years old, and would be a piece the Red Sox could rely on for the next few seasons. If the Nationals are open to starting from scratch, Abrams could be a great player for the Red Sox to target.
