The Boston Red Sox still have not added a bat to replace Alex Bregman in their lineup, but there is still time to change that.
Eugenio Suárez chose to sign with the Cincinnati Reds despite rumored interest from the Red Sox. However, MassLive’s Lauren Campbell revealed that Boston never made a formal offer to Suárez.
The Red Sox could still use an upgrade to their offense, and one name they have been linked to in recent weeks is Brendan Donovan of the St. Louis Cardinals. ESPN’s Buster Olney provided an update on where things stand with Donovan’s trade market.
“Perhaps most interesting position player available in the market: The Cardinals’ Brendan Donovan,” Oleny wrote on Sunday. “Some rival execs fully expect he’ll be moved in the next couple of weeks. The Mariners have had interest; he’d fit the Red Sox, too, although Boston seems intent on leaning on Marcelo Mayer in a big way this year, while going with a Hamilton/Gonzalez platoon at 2B.”
The Red Sox may be done adding to their offense, according to Olney. If Mayer figures to stick at third base, Boston would likely want someone who can play second base on a shorter deal.

Why would the Red Sox want someone on a short-term deal? Well, because they have already extended Kristain Campbell, and he figures to still be a part of their plans. Adding a second baseman on a long-term deal could block Campbell, whom Boston has already invested in.
Besides Donovan, Boston has been linked to Isaac Paredes. He may be a better fit in terms of his club control, but if the Red Sox want a platoon at second base as Olney suggests, they may just stick with what they have instead of making any additions.
