According to multiple MLB sources, including The Athletic’s Katie Woo, the Seattle Mariners are close to finalizing a trade for St. Louis Cardinals All-Star infielder Brendan Donovan.
Donovan has been sought after by multiple teams this offseason, including the Boston Red Sox.
Per reports, the Tampa Bay Rays are also involved in the trade as a third team.
Donovan delivered a solid and consistent 2025 season for the Cardinals, appearing in 118 games while primarily handling second base duties with occasional time in the outfield and elsewhere.

The versatile left-handed hitter posted a .287 batting average (tied for 19th in the NL), along with a .353 on-base percentage and .422 slugging mark for a .775 OPS. He accumulated 132 hits in 460 at-bats, scored 64 runs, drove in 50 RBIs, and added 10 home runs with 32 doubles and three stolen bases.
Donovan earned his first career All-Star selection, a testament to his reliable production and value in the lineup. He contributed a 2.7 WAR, showing strong contact skills with a low strikeout rate and effective hard-hit contact. Standout moments included a four-double performance against the Giants in late September, helping secure a win in one of his final games.
The Cardinals finished 78-84, placing fourth in the NL Central, and Donovan remained a steady presence despite the team’s overall struggles. Late in the year, he dealt with minor issues but finished strong.
