The Boston Red Sox still need to address their need for an impact bat, and another potential fit is off the board.
The Red Sox were reportedly interested in Eugenio Suárez, but the 34-year-old slugger chose to reunite with his former team, the Cincinnati Reds, instead. According to MassLive’s Lauren Campbell, his decision came down to the Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Why were the Red Sox not among his final options? Well, the answer is simple. The Red Sox never made a formal offer to Suárez, according to Campbell.
Suárez was the best available bat in free agency, and now the Red Sox will have to turn to the trade market if they still want to add an impact bat. They cleared some money by trading Jordan Hicks to the Chicago White Sox, and still have some room to work with if they want to trade for a bat.
The Red Sox have been linked to Brendan Donovan and Isaac Paredes in recent weeks, and with Suárez off the board, those talks could heat up.

It will not be easy to land either of those players, however. Neither the Houston Astros nor the St. Louis Cardinals seem inclined to deal their infielders, and would require a significant return to part with them.
After losing Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs, Marcelo Mayer currently figures to be the opening day third baseman. However, the Red Sox can still target third baseman with offensive upside and move Mayer to second base.
However, it will be tough to find a better bat than Suárez at this point. He hit 49 home runs last season and was named an All-Star. He figures to see most of his time as a designated hitter for the Reds and could have another monster season.
