The Boston Red Sox announced they claimed catcher Mickey Gasper off waivers from the Washington Nationals on Wednesday.

Gasper made his MLB debut with the Red Sox in 2024. He was originally a New York Yankees draft pick, but was taken by the Red Sox in the 2023 Rule 5 Draft. He played in 13 games for the Red Sox in 2024, going hitless in 23 plate appearances.

He was traded to the Minnesota Twins for Jovani Moran before the 2025 season. He played in 45 games for the Twins last season, making most of his appearances as a catcher. However, he also spent some time at first base, second base and in the outfield.

The Twins designated him for assignment on Jan. 14, and he was claimed by the Nationals. The Nationals designated him for assignment on Thursday. Since he was claimed off waivers, he was placed on the 40-man roster.

Gasper slashed .158/.257/.232 in the big leagues last season. He did hit two home runs and collect 11 RBIs, but he has struggled overall in the big leagues.

In Triple-A last season, he hit much better. He slashed .284/.385/.531 with 10 home runs. He also hit well for the Red Sox in Triple-A in 2024. He played in the Dominican Winter League this season, and had a .250/.400/.346 slash line for the Troros del Este.

He still needs work as a hitter, but he is a low-risk addition for the Red Sox. He could be a solid depth piece with the ability to play multiple positions off the bench.
