The Boston Red Sox are starting spring training, and the World Baseball Classic is also just around the corner.
Red Sox star Roman Anthony was not originally expected to participate, but it was announced that Corbin Carroll suffered a broken right hamate bone during a live batting practice session, and Team USA needs a replacement.
According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, Anthony is among the players being considered to replace Carroll.
“USA Baseball officials are working through possible injury replacements for Corbin Carroll,” Morosi wrote on Wednesday. “Steven Kwan, Tyler Soderstrom, Riley Greene, Roman Anthony, James Wood, Wyatt Langford and Kyle Stowers are under consideration, per source.”
Anthony’s insurance situation could be tricky. He missed time with an oblique injury last season. However, he would be a great addition to an already stacked roster.

In 71 games last season, he had a .292/.396/.463 slash line and eight home runs for the Red Sox. He figures to be even better against big league pitching with more experience. Team USA already has Aaron Judge, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Byron Buxton in the outfield.
However, adding Anthony would give them one of the best young players in baseball. There is no official word on who the United States will bring in after losing Carroll. However, he is not an easy player to replace.
The Red Sox’s other three star outfielders are already playing in the tournament. Jarren Duran is playing for Mexico, Wilyer Abreu is playing for Venezuela and Ceddanne Rafaela is playing for the Netherlands.
