The Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots will face off in the Super Bowl on Sunday, and Cooper Kupp recently revealed that the Patriots showed interest in him in free agency.
“They had reached out,” Kupp said Wednesday, per the Boston Herald’s Zack Cox. “They were interested, then they kind of went dark. So I think there was something there initially, but it never (advanced).”
Kupp finds himself in the Super Bowl facing the Patriots after signing a three-year, $45 million deal with the Seahawks. The Patriots went a different route and brought in Stefon Diggs, who has had a much better season than Kupp.
Obviously, Kupp is the No. 2 wide receiver for Seattle, thanks to Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Diggs is the Patriots’ No. 1 option. Kupp admitted that had talks advanced, he was open to the idea of joining a young quarterback like Drake Maye.
“That whole time was so crazy,” Kupp said. “I’d never experienced that before. And so it was one of those things where you kind of are open to a lot of different situations. You have a few things I think that you’re looking for, and one of them was a quarterback situation that was good. (The Patriots) certainly had that, so I think that was something that we would have been open to if it had come to it.”

Kupp is a former All-Pro and Offensive Player of the Year. He has already won a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams and won Super Bowl MVP in that game as well. He may not be having his best season, but given the attention Smith-Njigba will draw and Kupp’s experience on the big stage, he could be in store for a big game.
Kupp had 593 receiving yards and two touchdowns in the regular season. He has 96 yards and a touchdown in the playoffs. Even though Njigba will be the Patriots’ No. 1 focus in the passing game, Kupp is not to be forgotten. There was a reason New England was interested in him, and it’s because he is still a capable pass catcher.
