Monday was Groundhog Day, and unfortunately for those in the Northeast, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow. That means six more weeks of winter for New England, which has been blanketed by heavy snow, ice and sub-freezing temperatures in recent weeks.
On the plus side, Phil’s result is great news for Patriots fans. Of New England’s six Super Bowl victories in franchise history, five came after Phil saw his shadow.
The only one that didn’t was the Patriots’ most recent championship over the Los Angeles Rams seven years ago.
That bodes well for New England’s chances in Super Bowl LX this weekend against the Seattle Seahawks. The Patriots enter the week as 4.5-point underdogs at DraftKings Sportsbook, so the odds aren’t in their favor.
Phil also saw his shadow before New England played the Seahawks in the Super Bowl 11 years ago. The Patriots won that game on Malcolm Butler’s crazy goal-line interception in the final minutes.

Is Phil secretly a big New England fan? It’s hard to say. The Pittsburgh Steelers are the closest NFL team to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, but they haven’t won a playoff game in nine years.
The Patriots, on the other hand, might be on the verge of another dynasty.

So while New Englanders may not like Monday’s outcome, at least they can feel a bit better about their team’s chances on Sunday.
