Bruins Sign Pair Of Providence Defensemen To Two-Way Contracts

The Bruins retained depth to the blue line Friday.

General manager Don Sweeney announced in a press release that Boston signed defensemen Michael Callahan and Alec Regula each to one-year, two-way contracts with an NHL cap hit of $775,000.

Callahan recorded four goals and 13 assists for 17 points in 70 games with Providence last season. The 24-year-old skated in 140 career AHL games, all with Providence, totaling six goals and 21 assists for 27 points. The former Providence College captain originally was selected by the Arizona Coyotes in the fifth round of the 2018 NHL Draft.

Regula scored four goals and tallied 22 assists in 55 games with the P-Bruins last season. The 23-year-old recorded 16 goals and 61 assists for 77 points with a plus-42 rating in 163 career AHL games. Regula was acquired last season in a trade that sent Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno to the Chicago Blackhawks; the deal also included the acquisition of Ian Mitchell.

Callahan and Regula likely will feature for Boston in the preseason, which begins Sept. 22 when the Bruins face the New York Rangers at TD Garden.
