Red Sox Notes: Kutter Crawford Falters In Boston’s Loss To Dodgers

The Boston Red Sox shut out their opponents by a combined score of 8-0 in Kutter Crawford’s last two starts.

The Dodgers snapped the streak on Sunday, defeating the Red Sox 9-6. Crawford was shelled for six runs, five via the long ball, for his eighth loss of the season.

The 28-year-old right-hander gave up solo home runs to Freddie Freeman, Austin Barnes, Teoscar Hernández, Shohei Ohtani and Gavin Lux.

Crawford threw 69.7% of his pitches for strikes (53-of-76), striking out just two of the 22 Dodgers’ batters he faced over five innings. Crawford left with the Red Sox trailing 6-2.

Bailey Horn and Chase Anderson each pitched a scoreless inning before Kenley Jansen came in for the ninth inning.

Jansen pitched in back-to-back games for the first time since Aug. 29, 2021with his team trailing, according to The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier.

The Red Sox closer told reporters after the game that he will not be traveling with the team to Colorado for its three-game set against the Rockies due to a health issue that caused the 36-year-old to have his heart “shocked three different times” after pitching there.

“Too many times, stuff happened over there with me,” Jansen told reporters on Sunday night, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. “2022 was the last time I went there. It started off when I went back to Atlanta. I started having issues, and then a couple of weeks later, I went back to a-fib. Just try to avoid that right now.”

Jansen will rejoin the team when they host the New York Yankees at Fenway Park on July 26.

“We’re trying to get to the postseason,” he said. “I don’t think that’s a great time to go there and mess things up. The next thing you know, it’s going to hurt the team more. I’d rather skip that one and be ready for the Yankees series.”

— David Hamilton stole two bases in the second inning against the Dodgers. He now has 27 stolen bases in his first 85 career games with the Red Sox, behind only Jacoby Ellsbury, who had 36, according to Long.

— In the three games against the Dodgers, the Red Sox went 5-for-39 with runners in scoring position and left 25 men on base. They scored five runs in 15 2/3 innings against lefties and struck out 21 times during that span.
