Red Sox Arms Of Past, Present Help Boost Boston’s Playoff Hopes

The Boston Red Sox appeared to be in trouble after being swept in Monday's doubleheader against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The vibes have changed over the last two games as two wins made up two games in the American League wild-card standings.

Boston, now directly trailing the Minnesota Twins, sat four games out of a playoff spot entering play on Wednesday. The Red Sox need to take care of their own business with just a few weeks remaining in the season while obviously watching the out-of-town scoreboard.

Boston did its part on Wednesday night in a 3-0 win over the Blue Jays. Brayan Bello stepped up to energize the Red Sox and turn in the best start of his MLB career. He pitched eight innings for the first time while allowing just two hits and one walk with nine strikeouts. With the exception of his previous start against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Bello's back in a groove in the second half. That's a welcomed sign for the Red Sox down the stretch.

Meanwhile, Boston looked for a Twins loss to the Atlanta Braves. Former Red Sox ace Chris Sale stepped up for that initiative. He delivered his 14th (!!!) straight start allowing two earned runs or less. Sale tossed six solid innings with six strikeouts. Atlanta's offense did enough after that to lock down a 5-1 victory.

Two tested pitchers in the recent history of the Red Sox stepped up to deliver, directly or indirectly, quality outings to claw back closer after disaster appeared to strike just two days ago.

The Red Sox have 29 games left to play. They'll need consistent chances to win from their rotation after Bello set the tone with a standout showing on Wednesday night.
